Staff and Bios
Trillium Employment Services has been providing supported employment services to people with disabilities since 1983.
Trillium staff are our most important resource. We make an investment in
their personal and professional development. This was noted by CARF with an
exemplary conformance in Human Resources. “The organization has developed an
extensive orientation program for new staff members that spans the first year of
their employment. The program ensures that new staff members understand the
expectations of the organization and its commitment to excellence, quality and
personal and professional growth.”
Employment consultants are formally trained in systematic instruction, job
development, positive behavior support, first aid and CPR. In addition, several
staff have completed the Highline Community College Employment Professional
Certification Program.

Trish Borden
Executive Director

Trish Borden has been the Executive Director of Trillium since 1987. She has a master's degree in Special Education and extensive experience in working with adults with disabilities. Trish's experience with job development has included corporate development of opportunities at Boeing and Medtronic. She has also been active with development of public sector job opportunities, which included leadership to create state legislation to make it easier for people with developmental disabilities to become state employees. Trish is also very involved in the community having served for 12 years on the Auburn City Council and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Auburn.

Janice Berk Nelson
Program Manager

Janice Nelson has been a Community/Employment Consultant with Trillium since 1995. She helps people with disabilities find and retain employment in Auburn. In addition, she focuses on helping Auburn become a more inclusive community. Janice is active in many community organizations and events. Her involvement in Auburn includes the Auburn School Board. Janice has been successful with her own unique style of job development, which starts with getting to know as many people as possible in her community.

Aimee Nelson

Aimee has been working with people with disabilities throughout her career and specifically focused on supported employment since 1998. Aimee specializes in School-To-Work programs, ensuring students with developmental disabilities graduate job-ready and employed. Aimee is a trainer in systematic instruction as a consultant to other employment organizations and in the Washington State Certified Employment Professional program. Aimee has a degree in Psychology and a minor in Human & Family Development.

Sarah Holcombe

Sarah Holcombe has worked in the field of human services for several years. Prior to serving as an employment consultant at Trillium, she worked for Self-Determination Resources, Inc. as a personal agent, providing support services for adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteering is important to Sarah – she has donated her time to Special Olympics for twelve years with the Eagles and Cascade Ridge Racer teams. She graduated from Cornell College with a B.A. in philosophy. Sarah is a Washington State Certified Employment Professional.

Jesse Torgerson

Graduating from the University of Washington with a B.A. in law, societies, and justice, as well as political science, Jesse Torgerson’s education prepared him well for his position as an employment consultant with Trillium. His passion and understanding of the need for social justice and community building are beneficial to his job performance. Jesse comes from a family with long careers and extensive experience working with individuals with disabilities which drives his compassion for inclusive communities. Jesse is a Washington State Certified Employment Professional.

Jade Garrison

Jade Garrison brings strong credentials to her position as an employment consultant at Trillium. Jade is a graduate of Humboldt State University where she earned a degree in recreation administration. She has experience in developing summer camps for youth as well as working at before-and-after school recreation programs. Jade also worked for several residential programs for individuals with developmental disabilities before coming to Trillium. Jade is a Washington State Certified Employment Professional.

Diane has been working with people with developmental
disabilities since 1991. She has experience working in vocational, residential
and employment settings. Diane is a pioneer of supported employment in the state
of Texas. She relocated to Washington State in 2005. Diane has an Associate
Degree in General Business from Kilgore Junior College and a B.S. in
Organizational Management from Wiley College.

Becky Smelser

Becky Smelser has been an Employment Consultant with Trillium since 2009. She brings a strong educational and professional background to Trillium. Becky received a B.A. in Special Education from Arizona State University. She has pursued various additional educational opportunities since including becoming a Certified Life Coach. Prior to re-locating to Washington, Becky taught elementary school for four years and then owned her own successful company teaching gymnastics to pre-school age children.

Prior to coming to Trillium, Rhonda's background had been in education and the performing arts, both in Canada and the U.S. She believes that everyone has gifts and talents, and can thrive in life when the right opportunities and supportive environment are. Rhonda is fluent in American Sign Language. Her prior experience with adolescent and family counseling has been a fluid transition into supported employment.

Shaun has worked in the social services field since 2004. While attending the University of Washington, he gained experience with special needs populations by providing intensive ABA therapy to young children with autism and did outreach to homeless teens in the Seattle area. After graduating from the University of Washington Shaun worked as a Behavior Specialist, first working with foster children and their families and then helping children and teenagers with autism integrate into their schools and local communities. Shaun served in the Peace Corps, doing grassroots community development across Eastern Europe. Shaun enjoys supporting individuals to become more independent and integrated into their communities.
Karen Williams

Karen returned to Trillium in 2011 after working for affordable housing nonprofits in Washington DC and King County. Karen had been an Employment Consultant with Trillium from 2001 to 2005. She left Trillium when she moved to Washington DC to obtain her Master of Public Administration (MPA) from The George Washington University where she concentrated on public policy and nonprofit management. Karen has been dedicated to individual growth and community inclusion of people with developmental disabilities throughout her career and enjoys being part of Trillium’s innovative, quality services.

Julie has a passion for working with people with disabilities. Julie worked as a Para-educator for Auburn School District in the ECE program for six years working with young children with special needs. Julie enjoyed building new relationships, independence and confidence in these young children’s lives. Julie enjoys being an employment consultant, teaching her participants life skills and providing support so they can be valued members in their community and work places.

Casey joined Trillium after working 6 years in the Kent School District’s Transition program. Through this experience she helped prepare young adults for careers, developed community-based internship opportunities, developed job skills, and prepared students for life after school. Casey realized that everyone has the ability to learn a job skill and that most people want to work as a way to be a part of their community, which brought her to work in supported employment. Additionally, Casey has been a Special Olympics coach since 1985 through the Auburn Parks Department.

James discovered his passion for working with people with disabilities when he assisted his sister, who has a disability, to participate in her summer camp. James worked for three years as a Behavior Specialist, supporting students in school and in their group home life. These experiences led James to pursue work in the supported employment field. At Trillium James is able to apply his skills and passion, helping adults with disabilities find employment and have community inclusion.

Jason M. Van Loh

Jason M. Van Loh’s road to Trillium started in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was hired as a para-educator for the Monroe County Schools Transition program. He continued this work with Tacoma School District until he realized that being a Trillium employment consultant was his next career destination. He has a B.A. in history from Oregon State University and M.F.A. in creative writing. Jason is a published author of “flash fiction,” loves the Seahawks, and enjoys walking with his wife and dog.
Maringi Monga

Maringi brings 8-years experience working with people with disabilities in school settings, a Master’s in Special Education, and an undergraduate degree in Human Services. Maringi prides herself on being a creative thinker and innovative problem solver with a passion for people and our communities. She is actively involved in her community as a Cub Scout leader, Goodwill Goodguides mentor, and she leads “The Shed” project for Tillicum Woodbrook’s Neighborhood Association. Maringi’s drive is fueled by an enthusiastic approach to inclusive communities where everyone deserves job opportunities and all can make positive contributions to society.
Heidi Warren

Heidi has been active in the social service field since 2005 working with a variety of disenfranchised individuals and she brings a holistic perspective to the Trillium team. Heidi graduated in 2004 from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and is currently completing her Master of Social Work at the University of Washington-Tacoma with an emphasis on promoting diversity and social inclusion, enhancing the profession of social workers, and combating social justice issues. Heidi has strong beliefs in the capacities of adults with disabilities to achieve their goals.

Wendy Taliaferro

Wendy has been an activist for the civil rights of people who have disabilities for over 28 years in areas such as; employment, person centered planning, self determination, quality improvement and systems change. Wendy has a degree in Psychology and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication. She has been the Program Manager in Clark County since February, 2008.

Emily Dart-McLean

Emily has had the good fortune to be affiliated with people with disabilities through out her life, and brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to her work at Trillium Employment Services. Emily values and is an advocate for people with disabilities, and has a sparkling personality. For the past 3 years, Emily has partnered with the North West Down syndrome Association, to help plan and organize the children’s events at the annual buddy walk. Emily graduated from Portland State University with a BS in English and Women Studies.

Ashley Shola Lawson

Ashley was drawn to working at Trillium through her passion of networking and helping connect people to one another. After a year of studying American Sign Language Ashley has had the privilege of working with various individuals with auditory disabilities and in return developed a deep appreciation for the Deaf Community. Ashley also independently co-developed Eco-Fashion Camp where helping campers realize their visions and develop new proficiencies has fine-tuned her ability to communicate clearly, and directly with patience and a positive attitude. Through these pursuits along with her university focus in Women’s Studies Ashley understands the value of connecting disenfranchised groups of people to employment opportunities. In 2006 Ashley graduated with a BS in Arts & Letters from Portland State University.

Heidi is a Washington State Certified Employment Professional. With a back ground in sales and marketing, Heidi has the ability to relate to the business community. She has used this knowledge to achieve successful results when advocating for people with disabilities to obtain competitive employment. Heidi has a sibling with a developmental disability which has contributed to her lifelong commitment for an inclusive community. Heidi worked as a job developer in Kitsap County before joining Trillium in April 2010. Heidi has a true passion and takes pride in helping people achieve their employment goals.

Jaymie came to Trillium after several positive experiences being a coworker of people with developmental disabilities. At both a large law firm and a fitness club, Jaymie enjoyed promoting the skills of her coworkers with disabilities in ways that expanded their job duties and helped other staff appreciate their value in the company. Jaymie joined Trillium’s Kitsap team in 2011, bringing strong community ties and an excitement for networking with local businesses to create more employment opportunities.
